Being from a small town in Jersey, and a political illiterate, it’s no surprise, post arrival to Washington, that I have spent a few hours browsing numerous political websites, trying to make myself politic-friendly. Before taking this internship at Tricom Associates, I didn’t pay too much attention, partly because I didn’t find it interesting, and partly because I really could not understand political jargon. I knew I would have to change that to live in DC, therefore I started on a mission to finding my political-self.
First, I started to read. Washington Post, Huffington Post, Daily Kos, I looked at all of them. Still didn’t grasp what was going on. I tried to follow MSNBC and Fox News, but I just couldn’t get it. I felt like a cat trying to understand a bark. What are they talking about? What is the GOP, and why can’t the Tea Party support a presidential candidate? Then I realized: how can I grasp the concepts of current politics without an understanding of general politics?
Enter youtube. If you are like me, and learn visually as well as audibly, video is the way to go. I found several short clips, which were a huge help to refine my nonexistent political manner.
Because of this research, I was better able to understand President Obama’s State of the Union Address, and imagine how pleasantly surprising it was to take part in my roommates’ conversations about it. I’m not sure I will ever be best friends with politics, but I think it’s safe to say we’re acquaintances.
